The Science

Health Benefits &
The Research

Cielo's systems are built around a simple but powerful idea: your body performs better when you train it with heat and cold. Here's what the research actually says.

Regular sauna use has been linked to a wide range of evidence-backed benefits. The research is particularly strong on cardiovascular health - a landmark Finnish study found that men who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a 50% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Beyond heart health, consistent sessions improve circulation, reduce systemic inflammation, support deeper sleep, clear the mind, and trigger a significant release of growth hormone. Many of our customers describe it simply: they feel sharper, less sore, and more in control.
When you immerse in cold water (typically 45–59°F), your body activates a powerful chain of responses. Blood vessels constrict, pushing circulation to your vital organs. Norepinephrine surges - up to 300% - improving mood, focus, and stress resilience. After you exit, blood rushes back to the extremities, flushing metabolic waste from muscles. The result: faster recovery, reduced inflammation, and a calm, sustained energy that can last hours. With regular practice, your nervous system becomes measurably more resilient to stress.
Contrast therapy is the practice of alternating between heat exposure (sauna) and cold immersion (cold plunge) within the same session. The combination creates a "vascular pump" effect - your blood vessels rapidly dilate and constrict in response to temperature shifts, giving your cardiovascular system a workout that's hard to replicate any other way. The alternating hormonal cascade (heat triggers relaxation hormones; cold triggers alertness hormones) leaves you in an unusually balanced state: calm but focused. Most researchers and practitioners consider contrast therapy superior to either modality alone for recovery, mood, and metabolic health.
Frequency matters more than session length. Research suggests 3–4 sessions per week is the sweet spot for most people to experience measurable benefits in cardiovascular health, inflammation markers, and mental clarity. Daily use is safe for most healthy adults. A typical session - 15–20 minutes of sauna, 2–3 minutes of cold plunge, repeated 2–3 rounds - takes about 45–60 minutes total and fits naturally into a morning or evening routine.
The research here is compelling. Multiple large-scale studies (most prominently from the University of Eastern Finland) have found that regular sauna users have significantly lower all-cause mortality rates. The mechanisms include reduced cardiovascular stress, lower chronic inflammation, improved insulin sensitivity, and better sleep quality - all factors closely tied to biological aging. Heat stress also triggers heat shock proteins, which help repair cellular damage. This is why longevity-focused physicians like Andrew Huberman and Peter Attia consistently recommend sauna as one of the highest-ROI health habits available.
Yes - and this is one of the most underappreciated benefits. An evening sauna session raises your core body temperature significantly. When you exit, your temperature drops rapidly, and this drop signals to your brain that it's time to sleep - accelerating the transition into deep sleep. Cold therapy complements this by lowering cortisol and sympathetic nervous system activity. Many customers report falling asleep faster and waking up feeling more restored within just a few weeks of establishing a regular routine.
Yes. Sauna use at high temperatures triggers a significant release of beta-endorphins - the same neurochemicals released during intense exercise - creating what many describe as a "sauna high." Cold exposure causes a dramatic and sustained spike in norepinephrine and dopamine. Together, these neurochemical effects improve mood, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and sharpen cognitive function. Some researchers are now investigating regular sauna use as a potential adjunct therapy for treatment-resistant depression.
Most people notice improved sleep and better mood within the first 1–2 weeks of consistent use. Recovery improvements (less muscle soreness, faster bounce-back after workouts) typically appear within 2–4 weeks. Longer-term cardiovascular and metabolic benefits build over months of consistent practice. The experience of owning your own system at home - where you can use it on your schedule, every day if you choose - dramatically accelerates the results compared to occasional visits to a spa or gym.

Know Before You Start

Safety & Who Should Use

Sauna and cold therapy are safe for the vast majority of healthy adults. But they're not right for everyone. Here's what you need to know - and who should consult a doctor first.

Consult your physician first if you have: heart disease, arrhythmia, uncontrolled hypertension, chronic lung conditions, epilepsy, active infection, pregnancy, or recent surgery. For most people with well-managed conditions, a modified protocol may still be possible under medical guidance.
You should consult your physician before using a sauna or cold plunge if you have any of the following:
  • Heart disease, arrhythmia, or a history of heart attacks
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure or hypertension
  • Chronic lung conditions (asthma, COPD)
  • Active infection or fever
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Pregnancy (heat therapy is contraindicated during pregnancy)
  • Recent surgery or open wounds
If you're on medications that affect blood pressure, heart rate, or fluid balance, discuss sauna use with your doctor.
The rapid cardiovascular changes involved in contrast therapy - blood pressure rises in the heat, drops sharply in the cold - can be risky for people with uncontrolled hypertension. If your blood pressure is well-managed with medication and your doctor has cleared you for moderate exercise, sauna use may be appropriate with shorter session lengths and more gradual temperature transitions. Always get explicit clearance from your cardiologist or physician before starting.
Children can use saunas under adult supervision, but with significant modifications. Children's thermoregulation is less efficient than adults', meaning they overheat faster. We recommend limiting sessions to 5–10 minutes maximum at lower temperatures (around 140–160°F) for children over age 6. Cold plunges are generally not recommended for young children. Consult your pediatrician if you have any doubts about your child's readiness.
Exit the sauna or cold plunge immediately if you experience any of the following:
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Sudden weakness or numbness
  • Feeling of impending loss of consciousness
After exiting, rest in a cool area, hydrate, and if symptoms persist, seek medical attention. These signs are rare in healthy adults but should never be ignored.
A typical 20-minute sauna session at 185°F causes you to sweat out approximately 0.5–1 liter of fluid. We recommend drinking at least 16 oz of water before your session, having water accessible inside the sauna, and drinking 16–24 oz after you finish. Electrolyte supplementation is helpful for those doing multiple rounds or longer sessions. Avoid alcohol before or during sauna use - it significantly impairs your body's ability to regulate temperature.
No. Sauna use is contraindicated during pregnancy. Elevated core body temperature - especially in the first trimester - is associated with neural tube defects and other developmental complications. Cold plunges are similarly inadvisable during pregnancy. If you are nursing or recently postpartum, consult your OB/GYN before resuming.
People with Raynaud's (a condition causing excessive vasoconstriction in the extremities in response to cold) should approach cold plunge therapy with extreme caution and only under medical supervision. Even brief cold exposure can trigger severe arterial spasm in affected individuals. In most cases, we recommend against cold plunge use for people with moderate to severe Raynaud's.
03
How to Use

Protocols &
Routines

You don't need a complicated program to get results. Here's exactly how to use your Cielo system - whether you're on day one or six months in.

Round 1
15 min sauna
2 min cold plunge
Entry level
Round 2
20 min sauna
2.5 min cold plunge
Building intensity
Round 3
20 min sauna
3 min cold plunge
Total: ~60–75 min
Start slow. For your first 1–2 weeks:
  • Sauna: 10–12 minutes at 150–170°F
  • Rest: 5 minutes at room temperature
  • Cold Plunge: 60–90 seconds at 55–59°F
  • Repeat: 1 round only
From weeks 3–4, extend to 15 minutes in the sauna, 2 minutes in the cold plunge, and 2 rounds. By weeks 5–8, most people are comfortably doing 3 rounds of 20-minute sauna and 3-minute cold plunge. Listen to your body - there's no prize for pushing too hard too fast.
Traditional Finnish saunas operate at 160–195°F. This range delivers the strongest cardiovascular and hormonal effects documented in the research. Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures (120–150°F) and may require longer sessions (30–45 minutes) to achieve comparable benefits. Most experienced users settle into 175–190°F as their preferred temperature. Session duration of 15–20 minutes per round is the sweet spot for most people.
The research suggests that temperatures between 45–59°F (7–15°C) are effective for triggering the cold shock response and the associated hormonal and vascular benefits. Water below 45°F is unnecessarily harsh for most users and increases the risk of cold shock. If you're new to cold therapy, starting at 55–60°F and working down to your target temperature over several weeks is a smarter approach than jumping straight to the coldest setting.
Always sauna first. The standard contrast therapy sequence is: heat → cold → rest, repeated in rounds. Starting with heat opens up blood vessels and relaxes muscles, maximizing the contrast effect when you transition to cold. Ending on cold has the additional benefit of leaving you in a more alert, energized state - ideal for morning routines. If you prefer a more relaxed finish, end on 5–10 minutes of gentle heat or a few minutes of room-temperature rest.
Yes - and many performance athletes consider post-workout sauna one of the most effective recovery tools available. Sauna after exercise extends the cardiovascular load and enhances muscle recovery by increasing circulation and growth hormone release. If you're using cold plunge post-workout for immediate inflammation control, do the cold plunge first (within 30 minutes of training), then move to the sauna. Note: for strength training, some research suggests waiting 1–2 hours before sauna to avoid blunting the anabolic response to resistance exercise.
Most consumer electronics - including iPhones, Apple Watches, and Android devices - are not rated for temperatures above 113°F (45°C). Taking them into a 180°F sauna will likely permanently damage them. We recommend leaving devices outside and using the time as a deliberate digital detox - which, anecdotally, our customers say is one of the most valuable parts of the practice.

What We Build

Products, Design &
Customization

Every Cielo system is designed to perform at the highest level and look exceptional doing it. Here's what you need to know about our products.

Cielo designs and builds three core product categories:
  • Luxury Glass Saunas - Our flagship product. Full-spectrum heat therapy saunas built with premium clear cedar, tempered insulated glass panels, and aluminum framing. Designed for outdoor installation with a panoramic view of your surroundings.
  • Cold Plunge / Ice Baths - High-performance cold therapy units designed for contrast therapy pairing with our saunas. Available in multiple sizes for solo or dual use.
  • Outdoor Cold Showers - High-end design, weather-resistant outdoor showers for use between sauna and cold plunge rounds.
All three products can be configured as an integrated contrast therapy system - a complete at-home wellness environment.

  • Lighting: Chromotherapy LED lighting systems
  • Accessories: Aromatherapy dispensers, Bluetooth-compatible speaker systems, custom bench layouts
Our design team works with you directly to ensure the final product fits your space, your home's aesthetic, and your wellness goals.
Wood selection significantly affects durability, aesthetics, and the sensory experience. We primarily use clear cedar - the industry gold standard for sauna construction. Clear cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and decay, doesn't warp under repeated heat cycles, releases a therapeutic aromatic compound during heating, and maintains a beautiful appearance over decades of use. It also stays cool to the touch even at high temperatures, preventing burns on contact. For customers who prefer a more neutral aesthetic, we also offer thermally modified aspen and hemlock options.
Traditional barrel or cabin saunas are closed, opaque structures with small windows - designed for privacy, not visual experience. Cielo's glass-forward design is fundamentally different. Floor-to-ceiling tempered insulated glass panels connect you to the outdoor environment - your backyard, your landscaping, the sky - while maintaining heat and structural integrity. The insulated glass is rated for extreme temperature differentials and keeps the interior warm without fogging. It's designed to feel like an immersive outdoor ritual, not a box you're locked inside.
Yes. Our saunas are engineered as modular flat-pack systems - designed to be disassembled for shipping and reassembled on-site. This allows us to ship even large configurations affordably. Assembly is straightforward and designed to be completed by two adults in 2–4 hours using only basic tools. Detailed instructions and video guides are provided. Professional installation service is also available in select markets.
Our saunas are designed primarily for outdoor installation. Indoor installation in a large garage or dedicated wellness room is possible with proper ventilation, drainage, and electrical planning. Before It Arrives

Installation &
Setup

Installing your Cielo system is simpler than most people expect. Here's what you need to know before your unit arrives.

Our saunas require a level, stable surface capable of supporting the structure's weight (typically 600–1,500 lbs depending on size). Suitable options include:
  • Concrete slab (most common and recommended): Permanent, stable, and straightforward for electrical integration
  • Paver base: A level, compacted paver surface works well for most configurations
  • Composite decking: Structurally sound decking can support our saunas; consult with your contractor on load ratings
  • Gravel pad: A compacted crushed stone base is suitable for smaller units and creates natural drainage
Avoid installing on uneven ground, soft soil, or wooden decks not rated for the load.
Most Cielo saunas require a dedicated 240V circuit. Depending on the heater size:
  • Smaller units: 30-amp, 240V circuit
  • Standard units: 40–50-amp, 240V circuit
  • Larger custom configurations: up to 60-amp, 240V circuit
This work must be performed by a licensed electrician. Electrical work typically takes 2–4 hours and costs $300–$800 depending on run distance and local labor rates.
Permit requirements vary by municipality. In general:
  • Structural permit: Most prefabricated saunas under 120 sq ft do not require a building permit in the majority of U.S. jurisdictions, but this varies by county and state
  • Electrical permit: Almost universally required for new 240V circuit installations. Your licensed electrician typically handles this
  • Zoning: Setback requirements (minimum distances from property lines) may apply
We strongly recommend contacting your local building department before installation. We're happy to provide product specifications needed for permit applications.
The transition time between your sauna and cold plunge directly impacts the physiological effect - the shorter the transition, the more dramatic the vascular response. We recommend positioning your cold plunge within 10–15 feet of your sauna. Ideally, they're adjacent, with only a towel rack or outdoor shower between them. Avoid designs where the transition requires going through a door, up stairs, or across a long stretch of exposed yard in cold weather.
For a typical 2-person sauna and cold plunge system:
  • Foundation prep (if needed): 1–3 days (depending on concrete curing time)
  • Sauna assembly: 2–4 hours (for two adults)
  • Electrical installation: 2–4 hours (licensed electrician)
  • Cold plunge setup: 1–2 hours
Most customers are using their system within 3–7 days of delivery, with the majority of that time being foundation or electrical scheduling.
Cielo saunas are built for year-round outdoor use across all U.S. climate zones - including harsh winters, high heat and humidity, and coastal salt air. Our materials are selected specifically for outdoor durability: pressure-treated structural members, marine-grade hardware, insulated tempered glass, and exterior-grade cedar or thermally modified wood that resists moisture, UV, and insects. We've installed systems in Minnesota winters and South Florida humidity with equal success.

Your Investment, Protected

Warranty, Maintenance
& Care

A Cielo system is built to last decades. Here's what's covered and how to keep your investment in peak condition.

Component Coverage Term
Structural frame & wood components Manufacturing defects 5 Years
Glass panels & framing Manufacturing defects 3 Years
Heating systems & electrical components Manufacturer warranty applies 2 Years
Cold plunge mechanical systems (pump, chiller, filtration) Manufacturing defects 2 Years
Finish & aesthetics (staining, sealing) Workmanship defects 1 Year
Cielo saunas are designed to be low-maintenance. Basic routine care includes:
  • After each use: Wipe down benches with a dry towel, leave the door slightly open to ventilate and dry the interior
  • Monthly: Lightly sand benches if they develop gray discoloration
  • Annually: Inspect exterior wood and apply a UV-protective oil or sealant if the finish appears dry or faded
  • Every 2–3 years: Consider applying a fresh coat of exterior stain or oil, particularly in harsh climates
Cold plunge water quality is important for both hygiene and equipment longevity:
  • Weekly: Check and balance water chemistry (pH 7.2–7.6; sanitizer levels)
  • Monthly: Clean the filter and inspect the pump inlet for debris
  • Every 3–4 months: Full water change for units used daily
  • Annually: Professional chiller service inspection
We provide a detailed maintenance guide and support line for any water chemistry or mechanical questions.
Interior: No. Cedar's natural oils provide inherent moisture resistance, and interior sealants can off-gas at high temperatures. The interior should be left untreated and cared for with light sanding as needed. Exterior: Yes. We recommend applying a penetrating UV-protective wood oil annually or as needed when the wood begins to look dry. Without treatment, cedar will naturally silver over time - which many customers consider beautiful. Sealing simply preserves the warm honey tone longer.
Our systems are designed for year-round use in all climate zones, including cold winters. For active winter use, the sauna generates its own heat and requires no special winterization. The cold plunge chiller should be protected with a weatherproof cover and insulation on exposed plumbing lines in climates that regularly drop below 20°F. If you choose to winterize:
  • Drain the cold plunge completely and blow out lines
  • Cover the sauna door opening with our weatherproof cover kit
  • Disconnect and store the heater control unit indoors
We provide full winterization instructions specific to your configuration.

Yes - and increasingly so. According to data from the National Association of Realtors, 42% of homebuyers consider a sauna a highly desirable feature. In markets where wellness-oriented buyers are prevalent, a premium sauna and cold plunge installation can add $10,000–$25,000 to a home's appraised value and significantly shorten time on market. Luxury home buyers in 2025 and 2026 increasingly expect dedicated wellness spaces the same way they expect a home gym or media room.
A high-end wellness club or spa membership with sauna and cold plunge access costs between $200–$600/month in most major U.S. markets. A Cielo system - amortized over 10 years - costs roughly $150–$230/month, and that's without accounting for the time you save (no commute, no waiting, no scheduling) or the home value it adds. Beyond the economics: people who own their system use it dramatically more often than those relying on a gym or spa. And frequency is everything when it comes to results.
